Time: 9:40:18 pm Hi all;
My husband had a heart attack about 3 years ago. He was 64. We had good ins
urance with the company he works for. The hospital bills totaled about $120
,000.00 for the four by pass surgery he had. After a month or so, we receiv
ed a letter from the insurance company, Fortis by the way, that they were n
ot going to pay anything, because, 10 years earlier when my husband filled
out the paperwork for the insurance company, my husband missed circling the
word diebetes, as he is diebetic. Of course this was not on purpose. We w
ent to our lawyer, and there was nothing we could do about it. We had no c
hoice but to go bankrupt, which wasn't so good right before one plans on re
tirering, nothing like starting that part of your life with a bankruptcy so
close behind. We kept our house, as we continued to pay the house payments
, we even kept American Express, as we didn't owe them anything, and also t
wo gas cards that we didnt' owe anything on. So some advice, if you want to
keep a card, try to pay it off, then you will have it later. American Expr
ess is good, because you have to pay off the balance every month.
Anyway, after bankruptcy, you will get tons and tons of mail, offering you
ways to buy cars, get a charge card and so on. We were able to buy a brand
new car almost right away, but our credit was good up until then. I stron
gly suggest that you don't go out and get a new car, I regret that, try to
make do with what you have, and it is better to spend that money on a hous
e or save for a house. I don't regret going bankrupt, it was really bitter
sweet, we have veru few bills now, and things are better. My husband was r
eally upset, he felt the doctors should have been paid for what they did, h
e felt pretty bad. The lawyer said that medical bills was one of the main r
easons people go bankrupt nowadays.
