How to find a good attorney?Date: Wednesday, August 27, 2003
Time: 4:26:08 pm Hi all! I'll spare you the sob story, but in a nutshell I'm deeply in
debt and trying to avoid chapter 7. I've heard nothing but horror
stories about those "consumer credit counseling" services. I'm
unemployed but definitely have work coming up in a few months - I need
to get from here to there, but there's no way I can keep up the
payments in the meantime.
I've heard that a good bankruptcy attorney can get your credit card
interest reduced, or even set aside, so that you can start paying the
principal back. Sounds great, except that like any other profession,
it's made up of people and therefore you'll find good ones and bad
ones... so I'm looking for a site, or a group like this, where I can
get recommendations, ratings, or referrals. I don't have time to try
3 or 4 different people, and the attorneys I know already are in other
specialties and have not been able to suggest anyone. I'm in the L.A.
area, and ideally I'd like someone nearby so I can talk to them in
person rather than over the phone.
My credit so far is clean (my first late payments will be this
month...), and I have no assets worth noting. I'm behind on taxes
too, but I'm on a payment plan with the IRS. I've already talked to
my credit card companies myself and they seem unwilling to budge. I'm
pretty sure I'm headed in the right direction re: finding an attorney
to help me out; and chapter 7 is something I'd consider if there are
no other options. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
